about

This song started out as a rehearsal room jam on a slightly different riff, which evolved over time, mutated, and grew with the addition of an interesting lyrical idea. A documentary on the Battle of Hastings in 1066, about the then king, Harold Godwinson, and his brother, Tostig, provided the starting point. We used their story as a framing narrative to explore the ideas of love, broken trust and betrayal. The chorus invokes the element of water, which can signify emotion, depth, memory and distance, as well as renewal. William the Conqueror's Norman invaders crossed the waters of the English Channel to reach Hastings, so we really liked the symmetry of that, too.
